Pada tahun 1969 Gerakan telah menang besar dalam pilihanraya Malaysia dengan memenangi banyak kerusi terutama di P.Pinang dan Selangor. Perarakan kemenangan Gerakan di Selangor telah menyebabkan orang-orang Melayu menjadi marah maka berlakulah peristiwa berdarah 13 Mei 1969. Pada tahun 1973, setelah Malaysia ditadbir dibawah National Operations Council pimpinan Tun Abdul Razak semenjak dari tahun 1969, Gerakan telah menyertai Barisan Nasional dan telah diberi mandat memerintah kerajaan negeri P.Pinang. Semenjak dari tahun 1973,
Gerakan telah menjadi rakan setia di dalam Barisan Nasional dengan pencapaian paling cemerlang Ketua Menteri P.Pinang Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu yang telah berjasa membangunkan P.Pinang menjadi sebuah pulau bandaraya yang gemilang dengan bantuan daripada Kerajaan Persekutuan Barisan Nasional.
